The Coldest of Colds: A Surfer's Pride
Every surfing community has its own special pride, a unique experience that brings locals together. It's like a secret handshake, a bond formed in the lineup, where surfers compete for waves and share an exclusive adventure.
Imagine Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and Frankfort, Michigan - two charming Midwest towns on opposite shores of Lake Michigan. These places are like tight-knit communities, with beautiful lakeside neighborhoods that could've been plucked from an '80s horror movie.
I had the pleasure of visiting these towns for the premieres of our Hometown Hype films, and I discovered something fascinating. Despite the distance between them, these towns share a love for the frigid waters of Lake Michigan. It's a source of pride and joy for the locals, who not only brave the cold but embrace it with enthusiasm.
But here's where it gets controversial...
Great Lakes cold is a beast of its own. It's not just the high-elevation chill or the New York City blizzard kind of cold. The wind on the Great Lakes is relentless, and it bites. It's a cold that seeps into your bones, making ten degrees feel like a sub-zero nightmare, even with the best neoprene suits.
The ultimate challenge for Great Lakes surfers? Slushy waves. It's a bucket list item for many, and the Skelton Bros, TikTok stars, have braved these icy waters multiple times, documenting their adventures on YouTube. Last week, they hunted slushee waves again, emerging with icy beards and a tale to tell.
