Roblox's bold move to protect kids from online predators has sparked a heated debate. In a world where online safety is paramount, the gaming giant is taking a stand.
Roblox, a popular gaming platform with over 80 million daily players, is implementing stricter safety measures to shield children from inappropriate content and adult strangers. The new policy requires users to undergo facial age checks before accessing chat features, a move that has divided opinions.

Ofcom, the communications regulator, is tasked with enforcing these laws, and its director of online safety supervision, Anna Lucas, expressed satisfaction with Roblox's new age-checking measures.

The new age-based chat system will place users into groups: under 9, 9 to 12, 13 to 15, 16 to 17, 18 to 20, and 21+. Players can only chat with others in similar age ranges, unless they add someone as a "trusted connection." Under-13s will still be blocked from private messages and certain chats, unless a parent grants permission.
"But what about privacy?" Age checks will utilize facial estimation technology through the Roblox app's camera, raising questions about data processing and storage. Roblox assures that images are processed by an external provider and deleted immediately after the check, but some users remain skeptical.
The platform already restricts image and video sharing in chats and limits links to external sites. The company argues that the new system will provide more "age-appropriate" experiences, and expects other firms to follow suit.
