Oregon's Future: A Healthcare Boom and Beyond
The healthcare sector is set to dominate Oregon's job market, offering a promising future for aspiring professionals.
In a recent projection by the Oregon Employment Department, the state is anticipated to experience a significant boost in employment opportunities over the next decade. By 2034, Oregon is expected to add a total of 140,600 jobs, with the private healthcare and social assistance sector leading the charge. This sector alone is projected to create 40,400 new jobs, making it the fastest-growing industry in the state.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the overall job growth is impressive, the rate of growth varies across different sectors and regions. Sarah Cunningham, Oregon's projection economist, highlights that nearly all sectors will add jobs, except for the federal government, which is expected to see a slight decline.
"The exception is federal government, which is projected to see a slight decline in jobs. Private health care and social assistance is expected to add the most jobs by 2034," Cunningham stated in a video news release.
And this is the part most people miss... The healthcare sector's growth is not just about job numbers; it's about meeting the evolving needs of Oregon's population. With longer life expectancies and an aging population, the demand for healthcare workers is set to skyrocket. Cunningham emphasizes that three out of every ten new jobs will be in healthcare and social assistance, representing a 13% growth rate.
But what about other sectors? The professional and business services sector is expected to add 25,900 jobs, with a focus on architects, engineers, and computer services. The construction sector is also projected to grow by 10%, adding 11,600 jobs.
However, not all industries will thrive. Cunningham warns that certain jobs, like data entry and bank tellers, may face replacement by automation due to rapidly changing technology. She also highlights specific industries that are expected to experience bigger losses, including newspaper and book publishers, business support services, and paper manufacturing.
Despite these challenges, all regions of Oregon are set to add jobs, although growth may be slower in rural areas. The Portland tri-county area and Central Oregon are projected to lead with a 7% growth rate each, while other regions are expected to grow at or slightly below the statewide rate of 6%.
