A Montreal man is on the run after allegedly impersonating a bank employee and stealing credit card information from unsuspecting victims. The Toronto Police Service is seeking Madjid Benmaou, 20, who is wanted for multiple charges related to credit card fraud and false pretenses.
On October 1, 2025, a victim received a call from the suspect, who claimed to be a bank representative. The man falsely informed the victim that their credit card had been compromised and arranged for a courier to collect the card. After receiving the card, the suspect used it to make substantial purchases at a jewelry store in Mississauga, totaling $11,000.
Just two days later, on October 3, the suspect allegedly repeated this scheme with a second victim. He called the victim, pretending to be a bank employee, and claimed their credit card had been compromised. The suspect then collected the victim's card through a courier and made further purchases at a Mississauga jewelry store, this time totaling $14,000.
The police describe the suspect as having a large build, black hair, and dark brown eyes. He is believed to have connections to both Quebec and Mississauga and is known to drive a black Dodge pickup truck with the Quebec license plate 'AKJ52Z'.
Detectives suspect that there may be more victims, and they urge anyone with information to contact the police at 416-808-5500 or to provide anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.
This case highlights the importance of vigilance and caution when dealing with unexpected calls or requests for personal information. It serves as a reminder to always verify the identity of anyone claiming to be from a financial institution and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
