The once-bustling Glenwood Resource Center campus now stands eerily quiet, its gates firmly shut to the public. But why has this place, once a hub of activity, been transformed into a no-go zone?
Local authorities have tightened security, restricting access to everyone except those associated with the tenants of two remaining structures. Larry Winum, spokesperson for the Glenwood Redevelopment Corporation, which took over the campus earlier this year, sheds light on the situation. He explains that safety concerns, stemming from late-night loitering and vandalism, prompted law enforcement to recommend closing most of the campus.
"It's unfortunate, but necessary," Winum told KMA News. "We have two tenants on site: the Glenwood Community School District, which houses 100 daycare children and administrative offices, and the APEX program. Glen Haven Care Center is also located here. Their safety is paramount."
And this is the part most people miss: The campus closure isn't just about security. It's also a prelude to a massive transformation. Winum reveals that all but 10 of the campus's 100 buildings are slated for demolition, scheduled to begin in mid-summer next year.
"During negotiations with the state, it became clear they wanted all buildings demolished," Winum explains. "However, we at the Glenwood Redevelopment Corporation saw an opportunity. We believe some buildings hold historical or residential value and could be repurposed."
The redevelopment plan unfolds in two phases. Phase one involves the demolition itself, while phase two focuses on revitalizing the campus for residential, light commercial, and mixed retail use. The corporation is collaborating with Arch Icon of Woodbine to determine the best use for the site.
"We'll be reaching out to local developers and builders interested in constructing new homes and multifamily housing units," Winum says. "Arch Icon, with their expertise in remodeling, will assess the existing buildings to see what can be salvaged and repurposed."
Infrastructure improvements are also on the horizon. The corporation is working with the Iowa Department of Transportation to construct two new roadways off Highway 34, with construction slated to begin in spring 2026. Future plans include installing utilities on the campus.
But here's where it gets controversial: Is demolishing the majority of the buildings the best course of action?
