Even though the Washington Nationals previously turned down a trade offer involving their promising shortstop, CJ Abrams, from the San Francisco Giants earlier this offseason, it appears the team might still be considering a move. This comes after they already sent their top pitcher, Mackenzie Gore, to the Texas Rangers in a significant prospect-heavy deal. If the Nationals are truly committed to a future-focused rebuild, Abrams could very well be the next piece to be traded.
But here's where it gets interesting... Abrams is a dynamic player with immense potential. At just 25 years old, he brings an exciting blend of power and speed to the plate, coupled with solid defensive capabilities. This makes him an attractive asset for any team looking to bolster their lineup and defense.
Reports indicate that the Giants had offered their #44 ranked prospect on the MLB Top 100 list, shortstop Josuar Gonzalez, but Washington ultimately declined. This suggests that any team looking to acquire Abrams will likely need to put together a package involving multiple high-quality prospects.
While the Nationals are reportedly not actively shopping Abrams, they are open to hearing what other teams have to offer. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, and Seattle Mariners are among the teams that have been identified as potential fits for Abrams.
Abrams is currently under contract for $4.2 million for the upcoming season after agreeing to a one-year deal to avoid arbitration. He's under team control through the 2028 season, which adds to his value. His performance in 2024 was stellar, earning him an All-Star nod after he hit 20 home runs and stole 31 bases. He followed that up with a remarkably similar season in 2025, hitting 19 home runs and stealing 31 bases again in 144 games.
And this is the part most people miss... While Abrams has shown incredible offensive promise, the question remains: can he sustain this level of production as he continues to develop?
