Are you unknowingly wasting energy at home? It's time to find out!
Your home's energy efficiency is a big deal, and it all starts with its thermal shell. The walls, roof, floors, windows, and insulation are the unsung heroes that determine how much energy you need to keep your living space cozy. But here's the catch: not all homes are created equal in this regard.
CSIRO introduces the Energy Rating Finder, a powerful tool that reveals the secrets of your home's energy performance. Simply enter your address, and if your home has been rated, you'll get a score out of ten. But what does this score mean? Well, a zero-star home struggles to shield you from the elements, while a ten-star home maintains comfort with minimal heating or cooling.
And this is where it gets exciting! The tool is like a star label for your home, giving you an inside look at its energy efficiency. If your address isn't in the database, don't fret. There are other ways to estimate your home's performance, and we'll explore those soon.
Melissa James, a CSIRO data scientist, emphasizes the importance of accessibility. "We want to empower people with information about their homes' energy performance." And the benefits are clear: energy-efficient homes save money, provide comfort, and reduce carbon emissions, benefiting both homeowners and the planet.
The Energy Rating Finder is backed by a decade of data from the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS). Since 2003, average ratings have skyrocketed from 1.8 stars for older homes to seven stars for most new builds in 2025. But there's a catch—not all properties are included in the database.
CSIRO has been collecting data since 2016, focusing on homes built or renovated after this date and assessed using NatHERS, which covers 80% of assessments nationwide. And the good news? NatHERS is expanding to existing homes, meaning more data will be available in the future.
If your property isn't in the database, don't worry. CSIRO's RapidRate tool can estimate your home's efficiency with basic information. These tools are game-changers, offering Australians unprecedented insight into their homes' energy performance.
But here's where it gets controversial—what factors influence your home's energy rating? From insulation and window design to shading, ventilation, and even roof color, every detail matters. So, are you ready to unlock your home's energy-saving potential? Dive into these resources and discover the secrets to a more efficient and comfortable home.
CSIRO welcomes your feedback on the Energy Rating Finder. You can also opt out if you prefer to keep your property data private. Your input matters, so share your thoughts and help shape the future of energy-efficient homes!
